'Beating the Bounds!' A Being Human Festival Cafe

On Friday 18th November Dr Kennan will be co-hosting a Being Human Cafe as part of the nationwide Being Human Festival, in partnership with colleagues at Bader College, Kingston University, the University of Kent, Bexhill Museum and the Hailsham Pavilion.

Beating the Bounds is a local tradition dating back to medieval Britain and is a way of marking the boundary lines of the parish and common land. Today, boundary marker stones still surround areas of the Pevensey Levels, a site of Special Scientific Interest and national historical importance in East Sussex.  This Being Human Café will ask you to question your place in the local landscape and its history, thinking about how we can all work together to support environmental sustainability.

Three flash talks will introduce you to the biodiversity and history of the Pevensey Levels and the traditional practice of Beating the Bounds. This will be followed by a 40-minute community storytelling workshop on responses to the landscape and associated themes of boundary making using object handling, images and words. Finally, our 15-minute community documentary will be premiered.

If you are interested in ecology, biodiversity or local history this is the event for you! The event is free of charge and refreshments will be available!
